Artist Spotlight: Porches

Have you heard of the NY band Porches?   If not, check them out. Just saw them live at the Analog Theatre in Portland and was very impressed. They have a very clean live sound, and their new album “Pool” is leaps and bounds above the first. The sound is really quite unique. I find it very hard to describe... However, if I had to, I would say 90’s synth meets modern indie with a touch of autotune…  A few of my personal favorites are Be Apart, Braid, Hour and of course Car. Nonetheless, lets stick to their performance in guitar amps. Generally, tube amps are more responsive than what you will get in solid-state. They react much quicker and capture all your tone in a very smooth and warm manner. Why? The route in which they generate sound is cleaner. As a result of this you will get more “sound” at a lower wattage out of a...

Achieving BIG Sound in a Home Studio

Technology has a done a lot for the home recording artist. However, it still requires both patience and persistence to accomplish a studio quality sound. Here are a few tips to help point you in the right direction: #1 Take Your Time In order to achieve optimal sound it’s important to take a moment to dial in your tone. The settings you use when playing live are rarely the same ones you want to use when recording. Take a few minutes to adjust the levels on your amp and pedals in order to get that perfect tone. #2 Adjust your Microphone When recording with an external microphone try adjusting both the distance and angle from your amplifier. This can make...
