Artist Spotlight: Porches

Have you heard of the NY band Porches?   If not, check them out. Just saw them live at the Analog Theatre in Portland and was very impressed. They have a very clean live sound, and their new album “Pool” is leaps and bounds above the first. The sound is really quite unique. I find it very hard to describe... However, if I had to, I would say 90’s synth meets modern indie with a touch of autotune…  A few of my personal favorites are Be Apart, Braid, Hour and of course Car. Southern Spotlight: The Van Lears

We love music of all kinds, but even more importantly we love to acknowledge good people making great music. The Van Lears; Andrew and Trey check the boxes on both fronts. Their single “Matter...

Jim Ward = Renaissance Man

Sometimes there are musicians do incredible things beyond their music. Let’s take a moment to admire Jim Ward. You may recognize the name as the guitarist for the post-hardcore band At The Drive In, front man of Sparta and Sleeper Car or perhaps you have a had a sweet taste of one of his solo projects. In short; he is an incredible artist who continues to surprise us. Primarily because each project he works on is very different than the last. It’s obvious he has true passion and skill for creating music rather than chasing fads. In addition to his music abilities did you know that Jim has and still owns, bars/music venues, restaurants, cafes and non-profits? How about the...

Am I Good Enough to Join a Band?

There are a lot of musicians out there who choose not to join a band as they think they are not good enough… Who cares! Just do it, at the very least you will get WAYYYY better. I am writing this to encourage people who play casually or alone to seek out other musicians to jam with. The fear of not being good enough or simple lack in motivation is no reason to not join bands. Nothing compares to the feeling you get from practicing or performing with other artists. It’s like speaking a language that only musicians understand; and having amazing conversations in that language. It’s awesome!  At one point in life I found myself in this rut. I...
