Artist Spotlight: Porches

Have you heard of the NY band Porches?   If not, check them out. Just saw them live at the Analog Theatre in Portland and was very impressed. They have a very clean live sound, and their new album “Pool” is leaps and bounds above the first. The sound is really quite unique. I find it very hard to describe... However, if I had to, I would say 90’s synth meets modern indie with a touch of autotune…  A few of my personal favorites are Be Apart, Braid, Hour and of course Car. Need Gear Demos? Gear-Talk.Com

A couple weeks I did a post for my fellow gear nerds in search of a good podcast. Now we must move onto gear reviews/demos. This is arguably the most important resource an artist needs. Look no further: www.gear-talk.com If you are like me, you often spend hours researching your next guitar, pedals, amp, or hey, even the best guitar straps! Lance Seymour of Gear Talk has created a place for musicians, which provides a one-stop shop to all your needs. Unlike many of the gear “reviewers” out there, Lance is a no BS guy. The days of trying to cut through a windbag reviewers video in order to get what you need are over. Just straightforward demos of the...

Need a Gear Podcast? ToneMob.com

ToneMob.com Blake Wyland of Portland, OR created Tone Mob in March of 2015, after imagining a world where people might actually listen, and join him in the mutual obsession of guitars, pedals, amps and tone. From his humble beginnings of a few nerds, his listener community of gear enthusiasts has expanded worldwide. What we appreciate most about Blake's podcast is there is no cheese ballin. Just real dudes talking about cool things. Most of Blake’s segments are simply interviews with people from all corners of the music industry. People creating effects pedals, guitars,...

Tube or Solid-State?

Tube or Solid-State? What is the difference between the two? Which guitar amp is best for you? Depends! Let’s start with tube. This type of technology has been around since before World War 11 and has existed in many forms outside of guitar amps. They were used in things like radios, telephones and even early televisions. Nonetheless, lets stick to their performance in guitar amps. Generally, tube amps are more responsive than what you will get in solid-state. They react much quicker and capture all your tone in a very smooth and warm manner. Why? The route in which they generate sound is cleaner. As a result of this you will get more “sound” at a lower wattage out of a...
